URBANO CELLARS WINE TASTING AT DOLLAR CLUBHOUSE, AUGUST 2016
Urbano Cellars Wine Tasting at Dollar House
Please join the Rossmoor Wine and Food Society on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. for a tasting of Urbano Cellars of Berkeley wines at Dollar House. We will experience and share a tasting of five of their specially selected wines presented by Fred Dick, owner and winemaker, who will share some of his extensive wine knowledge with us to add to our enjoyment of the wines. The wines will be paired with an appropriate selection of appetizers.
We will begin our tasting with the 2015 Viognier. For those of you who attended our wine tasting at the Basque Cultural Center earlier this year, you may remember the Urbano Cellars 2014 Viognier, which was a definite group favorite. This 2015 Viognier is pale golden in color and shows aromas of honeysuckle and citrus blossoms. It has a mild, yet bright mouth feel that balances the richer aromas. We will then taste the 2015 Chenin Blanc, which shows aromas of peaches, melon and pear along with honeysuckle and hints of pineapple and citrus. It is crisp, clean and fruity on the palate with a medium body, mineral overtones and bright acidity.
We’ll then move on to taste three red wines. The first two are Italian varietals Sangiovese and Barbera, each are composed of 100% of the specific varietal. The 2013 Barbera is light/medium garnet in color with black berry and black cherry aromas along with hints of violets, lavender, cloves and a bit of anise. Black fruit and a hint of strawberry leave slightly tart cherry flavors on the palate; light tannins, bright acidity and a medium mouth feel balance this wine with a lingering finish. The 2013 Sangiovese has aromas of cherries and raspberries with hints of mint, rose petals and a bit of leather and oregano. Fresh slightly tart cherries, raspberry and red plum fruit is left on the palate with bright acidity along with moderate tannins balance this wine, making it a great food partner. We will complete our tasting with the 2013 Cotes du Clements, which is a blend of 34% Syrah, 33% Grenache and 33% Mouvedre. This blend of Rhone varietals was aged in a mixture of mostly neutral French and American oak barrels for about 18 months. It is medium/dark garnet in color exhibiting fresh blackberries, black cherries and a bit of raspberry aroma along with floral notes of violets and rounding out with some licorice, mushrooms and hints of clove and cinnamon.
