Rossmoor Wine and Food Society
FRANCE AND CALIFORNIA COMPARATIVE WINE TASTING
Donner Room, Event Center
Please join the Rossmoor Wine and Food Society on Thursday March 15, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Donner Room at the Event Center for a side by side comparative tasting of wines from France and California presented to us by Wine Thieves of Lafayette. Our first comparative flight will be with wines made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape. A Domaine Auchere Sancerre from the Loire Valley of France has a clean minerality, bell pepper and citrus notes, and finishes with a refreshing acidity with a hint of lemon zest. A Brady Sauvignon Blanc from Paso Robles, is a delicate wine featuring aromas of green apple and guava with subtle notes of lime zest. Grilled Shrimp with Chili Lime Sauce and Seafood Ceviche with Chilled Crab Meat, Tomato, Onion and Peppers served with chips will be paired with these wines.
Our second flight will include Rhone blends, made of Grenache, Syrah and Mouvedre grapes. Saint-Roch Cotes Du Rhone from France, with flavors of black currants, violet, mulberry and sherry, aromas of stone fruits, cherry and leather. It is a pleasantly powerful wine with generous, yet balanced tannins. High on the Hog Red Blend, from Paso Robles of the same 3 grapes with loads of black cherry, white pepper, black tea and hints of smoked meat on the finish. These wines will be paired with Stuffed Potatoes, with Sour Cream, Blue Cheese, Bacon and Chives and La Vash, Armenian Cracker Bread with a meat filling.
Our final flight will be Bordeaux blends based on Merlot and Cabernet Blends. We will compare a Chateau Reynats, Haut Medoc from Bordeaux, France showing elegant black currant flavor. Pencil-lead minerality and acidity show through on this “old school” Merlot-based Bordeaux blend. Terroir, Dusty Red from Napa Valley, is a blend of the Bordeaux varietals, with a California filler, Syrah, to complete the assemblage by coating the wine with full, juicy notes while adding a layer of complexity. These wines will be paired with Grilled Tri-Tip and Arugula on a Lightly Toasted Crostini with Garlic and Horseradish, Aioli Topped with Crumbled Blue Cheese and Mini Cheeseburger Sliders with condiments and Dijon Aioli. And of course, we will complete the tasting with delicious chocolates.
