Craft Beer Tasting at Dollar House
Please join the Rossmoor Wine and Food Society on Thursday, August 6, 2015 at Dollar House from 4:00 – 5:30 for a new tasting experience. We will taste beers of various styles and from different regions of California as well as Oregon, Washington and Louisiana. A distributor working with Wine Thieves will come to Rossmoor to present and discuss the beers. Light appetizers will accompany the tasting.
We’ll begin our tasting with Allagash Odyssey Barrel, an aged Dark Wheat Beer from Portland, Oregon. It is a dark beer aged for 10 months, a portion in oak barrels and the remainder in stainless steel tanks. The flavor hints of dates with a mildly roasted finish imparted by aging in both medium and heavy toast American Barrels. The finish is dry, punctuated by vanilla. Next we will taste Tieton Apricot Cider from Washington, which is a crisp apple cider infused with the tartness of apricot. The apple notes play a supporting role and let the tartness of the apricot shine. We will then move on to an Abita SOS Pilsner from Louisiana. This unfiltered Weizen is made with Pilsner and Wheat malts and has a brilliant gold color, a sweet malt flavor and a pleasant bitterness and aroma.
We will follow with four different California beers starting with a North Coast PranQster Golden Ale from Fort Bragg. Belgian Ales represent the height of the brewers’ art. Sophisticated brewing techniques, yeast blends, and unique flavoring elements have elevated the beers of Belgium to the status enjoyed by wine in other countries. PranQster follows in this tradition using a mixed culture of antique yeast strains that produce a floral nose, a full fruity flavor and a clean finish. Then we move on to a Mother Earth Boo Koo IPA from San Diego, which is a straw colored All Mosiac IPA. This brew is hop forward, spotlighting the piney aroma and foresty flavors, providing an overall unique experience. Next is a Cismontane Citizen Cali Lager from Santa Ana. The California Common almost disappeared after prohibition, as did the term Cismontane. This interpretation of style is a golden warm fermented lager with sufficient hop aroma. We will complete the tasting with Strand Batch 100 Stout from Orange County. This beer pours near black with a huge tan head and a chocolate and treacle aroma. There is a hearty dark chocolate flavor with a bitter finish – a nice dessert drink – which will be served with chocolates.
Cost for this summer tasting is $20 per member or $25 per guest. Our events fill quickly and the tasting event is no exception. Please note that all reservations must be in no later than July 23, 2015. No refunds after July 23, 2015 when the number of attendees is confirmed with the providers of the beer and food. Notice of this event will not appear in the Rossmoor News. If you are unable to attend after you have sent in your reservation, please contact Helen Kane 954-8486 or Louise Ng 997-3335 so that we may call those on our wait list.
