Rock Wall Wine Company
Please join us on April 30, 2015, to visit Rock Wall Winery located on the former Alameda Naval Air Base, which was decommissioned in 1997. The name Rock Wall refers to the defensive perimeter built during WWII in the San Francisco Bay to protect the base from Japanese air and sea torpedoes. The winery offers wine lovers one of the most unique experiences in the wine world and boasts spectacular views of the San Francisco skyline.
At the winery we will be treated to a tour of the 40,000 square foot converted hangar in which the winery produces its wines. The hangar has been retrofitted with state-of-the-art winemaking equipment. After the tour we will taste 6 of their specially chosen wines beginning with a 2014 Sparkling Grenache Rose with flavors of white grape and strawberry shortcake. We will then taste the 2013 Chardonnay, Estate Reserve, which exhibits flavors of sugar cookie, dry-mango, vanilla and passion fruit. We will proceed to an unusual white varietal, the 2014 Fiano, showing flavors of tangerine, pineapple, macadamia nut and lemon meringue pie.
We will then move on to a flight of three red wines, beginning with the 2011 Harris Kratka Zinfandel with flavors of plum, coconut, cocoa, rosemary, lavender and cherry. The second will be the 2013 Romancer, which is a blend of Petite Sirah and Zinfandel, exhibiting flavors of cocoa puffs cereal, plum, cherry with a lavender and raspberry finish. We will finish our tasting with the 2013 Tannat, the Palindrome, another unusual varietal, showing flavors of cappuccino, dark chocolate, blackberry pie and tobacco.
Lunch will be catered by Scolari’s catering located on the Rock Wall property. We will have three of their sandwich creations, “The Rock Wall” featuring Dried Fig and Marcona Almond Chicken Salad with Mixed Greens, “The Goodfella” with Grilled Chicken Breast, Grilled Radiccio, Sundried Tomatoes, Fresh Mozzarella, Arugula and Balsamic Vinaigrette and “The Black Cat” featuring Proscuitto, Hard Salami, Hot Coppa and Provolone with Roasted Peppers, Arugula, Olive Oil and Black Pepper. A House Pasta Salad with a creamy Balsamic Vinaigrette, Kale Avocado Salad with Lemon and Olive Oil, and Scolari’s “Toasties”, Crispy Beef Meatballs with Dipping sauces and House Bread will also be served. We’ll finish with a dessert of Mini Chocolate Chip Cannolis. Two additional wines will be offered with lunch, the 2013 Sauvignon Blanc with flavors of mango, Asian pear, nectarine, lemonade and orange zest and the 2013 Super Alameda, a special red blend to celebrate the winery’s location, with flavors of candied apple, caramel, cigar tobacco, plum and rose petal.
After lunch there will be time to visit the tasting room, which has a few gift items, and wines to purchase if desired.
Our bus will leave Rossmoor at 10:30 AM to arrive at the winery by 11:30 AM for our tour, followed by wine tasting and then lunch at approximately 1:00 PM. We will depart for Rossmoor at 3:00 PM.
