Wine Tasting in Berkeley and
Dinner at the Basque Cultural Center
Please join the Rossmoor Wine and Food Society on Thursday, February 4, 2016, for a taste of Urbano and Paradox wines, at Urbano Cellars in Berkeley. Then on to dinner at the Basque Cultural Center in South San Francisco. Two for the price of one!
We begin our afternoon with a stop at Urbano Cellars, in Berkeley, to taste Urbano Cellars 2013 Chenin Blanc, which show aromas of melon, pear, Fuji apple, with hints of pineapple and jasmine. This wine is a medium bodied wine, crisp, clean and fruity on the palate. We will also taste a 2014 Viognier, with aromas of honeysuckle and citrus blossoms along with peaches. It has a bright mouth feel that balances the richer aromas.
We will be served three French style red wines from Paradox Cellars, beginning with a 2012 Pinot Noir, sourced from the Sonoma Coast and aged for twenty months in French Oak, which yields a perfectly balanced vintage with classic aroma and fruit forward characteristics. We’ll then taste the 2013 Merlot, aged eighteen months in French Oak that brings rich fruit with notes of black cherry, raspberry and plum with medium tannins and a soft finish. The 2012 Reserve Syrah, aged in medium toast French Oak, provides a complex structure and mouth feel which balances beautifully with the expansive fruit of ripe cherries, pomegranate and a hint of caramelized spices, leading to a lush elegant finish which completes our tastings.
The wines will be presented to us by the winemakers from Urbano and Paradox Cellars and there will be an opportunity to purchase wines for anyone who wishes to do so.
Then off to the Basque Cultural Center in South San Francisco for dinner, which will begin with a selection of appetizers featuring Feuillete with Shrimp and Avocado, Smoked Duck Breast with Black Olive Tapenade, and Prunes wrapped in Bacon. This will be followed by Soup du Jour and a salad of Butter Lettuce with Housemade Vinaigrette. For the entree you will have a choice of Salmon with Champagne Sauce served with Rice Pilaf and vegetables, Filet Mignon in Shallot Sauce, or Rack of Lamb, each of which will be served with Scalloped Potatoes and vegetables. Frozen Almond Nougat and coffee will complete our meal. Chamisal Vineyards 2013 Stainless Chardonnay, aged and fermented entirely in stainless steel, highlights the natural essence of the grape will be enjoyed in its purest form, provides a rich and zesty wine, dancing with flavors of green apples, tangerines and pineapple, and Woodwork 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in American White Oak which provides flavors of vanilla and sandalwood with fruit expressions of blackberry and currant will be served with our meal.
